You were my first friend, my first hero.
Until I discovered John Wayne.
Then our world grew large and mean.
You gave me music,
And then you left.
You made us learn to live without you.
We’d finally begun building a bridge.
Perhaps we’ll finish it soon.
But for now we must say farewell.
Fair winds and following seas, dear “Big Bother”*.

**From To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time by Robert Herrick, 1591 – 1674
I wept because he died,

“What if he’d never lived?”

“For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime! Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning.”
